Columbus was settled on February 14, 1812. Columbus was incorporated on February 10, 1816 and became the state capital in 1816 and Franklin County seat in 1824. Columbus is home to Ohio State University.

Columbus is home of Admiral Linda Lee Fagan (born July 1, 1963) who serves as the 27th Commandant of the Coast Guard. Admiral Fagan is the Coast Guard’s first female four-star admiral. On June 1, 2022, Admiral Fagan became the first female officer to lead a branch of the American armed forces.
After 232 years, the Coast Guard has its first female leader, Admiral Linda Lee Fagan. In 2021, Fagan became the 32nd (and the very first female) Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard’s first female four-star admiral in its 232 year history.
“This is a big deal,” President Biden said at the U.S. Coast Guard headquarters in Washington D.C. Biden commended Fagan on her decades of service, beginning in 1985, during which she served on all seven continents. Biden: “It’s about time.” On May 11, 2022 she was confirmed by the United States Senate to head the U.S. Coast Guard, assuming office on June 1, 2022.
Fagan graduated from the United States Coast Guard Academy in 1985 with a B.S. degree in marine science. She later earned a Master of Marine Affairs degree from the University of Washington in 2000 and an M.S. degree in national security strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces at the National Defense University in 2008.
